Kizhi massage, also known as pinda swedam or potala swedam is a medicated fomentation therapy wherein medicated powders, herbs are tied in cloth bags & the body is massaged with these bags, the application of pressure varied according to the nature of ailment and the spot. This absorbs the inflammation in the affected area thereby reducing muscle and joint pains.

There are various types of Kizhi treatment, which are called by different names according to the medicaments used in it. They include:

Ela Kizhi Treatment: Kizhi is prepared using different leaves of medicinal plants and herbs along with medicated powders. It is dipped in hot medicated oil and applied to the body or affected area.
Njavara Kizhi Treatment: This kizhi involves cooked medicinal rice called njavara, blended with milk and herbs tied in a muslin cloth bundle and applied all over the body in a rhythmic manner.
Podi Kizhi Treatment: In Podi kizhi cotton bag filled with a hot mixture of herbal powders are used.
Mutta Kizhi Treatment: In Mutta Kizhi, boiled egg yolks and medicated herbs are used and applied to the body after dipping in medicated oils.
